Thinking about choosing either the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric or the Ford Mustang Mach-E as your new electric crossover? Both options are excellent, which of course makes your decision a complicated one. Check out our comparison guide for a side-by-side look at these battery-powered family vehicles.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is actually a luxury crossover, and its price tag reflects its interior opulence. Ford’s electric hotrod starts at $42,895. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Kona Electric offers a significant money-saving opportunity, with an MSRP that starts at $34,000.
As we mentioned, the Mustang Mach-E is a bit of a hotrod. However, power ratings depend on battery and trim model. The most powerful model is the Mustang Mach-E GT, which zooms around with up to 480 horsepower and 634 pound-feet of torque. This powerhouse will cost you a little bit of battery mileage, however, because its range is only 235 miles. For a longer-lasting battery, check out the Mustang Mach-E California Route 1, which supplies up to 305 miles of range.
The 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric is much more straightforward, with only one electric powertrain available for its two trim models. The Kona Electric’s battery-powered motor supplies 201 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque. It’s not exactly a hotrod, but it gets you around town with power to spare. The battery is also EPA-rated for 258 total miles, which is also very impressive.
Both the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric and Ford Mustang Mach-E were designed with your comfort in mind. No matter which crossover you select, you’ll find plenty of room for passenger heads, legs, and elbows in every seating position.
These electric crossovers also provide an impressive range of upscale options. However, the Kona Electric gives you more of a traditional options lineup, with features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-trimmed seats available. The Mustang Mach-E, in spite of being much more expensive, sticks with faux leather.
This was a tough call because both electric crossovers come standard with excellent collections of infotainment features and safety aids. However, the Kona Electric takes the lead, thanks to its user-friendly infotainment interface. The system is easy to use, even if you’re not experienced with in-car infotainment technology. We also like how well the Hyundai safety aids work, alerting you to danger only when necessary.
Like the Kona Electric, the Mustang Mach-E infotainment system also includes the new wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Mustang Mach-E infotainment touch screen is huge, with a 15.5-inch diagonal. Also, just like a Hyundai, this new Ford crossover is outfitted with an impressive range of safety aids, though we think the Hyundai versions are less prone to crying wolf.
There’s no doubt that the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is an outstanding electric crossover. However, if you’re looking for the best deal on a battery-powered drive — one that includes lots of luxury options, standard tech features, and a smooth, refined drive — the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric is the real winner.
