In 1889, Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Co. Ltd opened for business to commercialize John Boyd Dunlop's patent for pneumatic tires for bicycles. Throughout the years, the ownership of the Dunlop trade-names has been fragmented. Since 1997, Sumitomo Rubber Industries and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company formed a joint venture and agreed to manufacture tires for each other's markets, including Dunlop branded tires. Goodyear acquired 75% interest in Dunlop.
