Bridgestone Tires continues to be ranked as #1 on the global tire market according to the annual report published by Tire Business Research and Data Center. The 2011 Global Tire Company Rankings showed that for the third year in a row, Bridgestone Corporation held its top rank with Group Michelin, Goodyear and Continental A.G. coming in second, third and fourth, respectively. Bridgestone Americas’ corporate family indicates that its origin traces back to two distinguished companies— The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, begun by Harvey Firestone in Akron, Ohio in August 1900, and the Bridgestone Tire Company Ltd. started in Japan in 1931 by Shojiro Ishibashi. Ishibashi used an English translation of his surname (Ishi = stone; bashi = bridge) to name his new venture. In 1974, Bridgestone Corporation bought Firestone for $2.6 billion, making the companies’ combined operations into the world’s largest tire and rubber company. And in 1992, the company now called Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc., moved its headquarters from Akron to Nashville in 1992.
